M-Line Trolley Valentine Delight: What makes alternative modes of transportation so romantic? While I can't explain horse-drawn carriages, hot air balloons, or tandem bicycles, the M-Line Trolley is an easy one. For Valentine's Day, it will be re-branded as Streetcar Named Desire and take passengers to three McKinney Avenue restaurants for one course each. Malai Kitchen will serve appetizers, Perry's will make the entrees, and Bread Winners handles dessert. Hop on the trolley February 9 near the Cityplace DART Station.

While we appreciate the nod for desserts, we'd like to remind you that we have many mouth-watering entrees for this evening. You will be order to order off the regular menu, but we have created a special menu as an option for you:

Boston Globe declares Bread Winners a "Can't Miss" Destination for Visitors

The Boston Globe started off 2012 by paying a visit to Dallas. They pondered, "This city seems to be all over TV these days. Lamar Odom, who rose to fame as a Los Angeles Laker and is married to reality TV star Khloe Kardashian, was recently traded to the reigning NBA champion Dallas Maver- icks. Entertainment news shows have been asking, ‘‘But what will California-bred Khloe do with herself in Dallas?’’

We were fortunate enough to be highlighted as a "can't miss" destination. The writer exclaims, "We ventured to Bread Winners Cafe in Uptown, and when we arrived, we almost didn’t make it past window shopping in the front bakery. We were greeted by mouth-watering sweet treats — homemade strawberry and banana cream pies, cheesecake, chocolate brownies, breads, cookies. The place was packed.

We walked through several formal dining spaces en route to our table in an enclosed garden patio with plenty of greenery and light. We quickly relaxed and dug right into the basket of moist breads. The menu included everything from the more traditional eggs any style and a smoked salmon bagel to the spicier breakfast burrito and tacos. I ordered a scramble of eggs, grilled chicken, ham, onion, tomato, and jack cheese with potatoes ($9.99)."

The UNICEF Tap Project is a nationwide campaign that provides the world’s children access to safe, clean water. During World Water Week, March 20-26, Bread Winners will join other restaurants across the United States to encourage patrons to donate $1 or more for the tap water they usually enjoy for free.

All money raised through the UNICEF Tap Project has gone toward UNICEF’s water, sanitation, and hygiene programs. Since 2007, the UNICEF Tap Project has raised nearly $2.5 million for water and sanitation programs for children in Belize, the Central African Republic, Côte d’Ivoire, Guatemala, Haiti, Iraq, Togo, and Vietnam.

Empty Bowls = Full Heart

Empty Bowls is an international grassroots effort to fight hunger and was created by The Imagine Render Group. The basic premise is simple: Potters and other craftspeople, educators and others work with the community to create handcrafted bowls. Guests are invited to a simple meal of soup and bread. In exchange for a cash donation, guests are asked to keep a bowl as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. The money raised is donated to an organization working to end hunger and food insecurity.

Empty Bowls is being held today at The Myerson today from 11am-2pm. Proceeds will benefit the North Texas Food Bank. 30+ restaurants are participating in this great anniual event.

Bread Winners is serving Chicken Enchilada Soup and Ben E Keith was kind enough to donate all the ingredients to us, so koodos to them for that! Bread Winners alone will serve about 1100 bowls today.

What is a King Cake? Let Bread Winners tell you a story...

What's a King Cake, you ask?

The King Cake tradition came to New Orleans with the first French settlers and has stayed ever since. Like the rest of Mardi Gras during those early days, the king cake was a part of the family's celebration, and really didn't take on a public role until after the Civil War. In 1870, the Twelfth Night Revelers held their ball, with a large king cake as the main attraction.

Instead of choosing a sacred king to be sacrificed, the TNR used the bean in the cake to choose the queen of the ball. This tradition has carried on to this day, although the TNR now use a wooden replica of a large king cake. The ladies of the court pull open little drawers in the cake's lower layer which contain the silver and gold beans. Silver means you're on the court; gold is for the queen.

With the TNR making a big deal over the king cake in the society circles, others in the city started having king cake parties. These parties particularly among children, became very popular and have also continued to today.

Up through the 1950s, neighborhoods would have parties. One family would start the ball rolling after Twelfth Night, and they'd continue on weekends through Carnival. Whoever got the baby (the coin or bean had changed to a ceramic or porcelain baby about an inch long by then) in the king cake was to hold the next party. You can still hear stories from folks who were kids during the Great Depression of what their mommas would do to them if they came home with the baby from a king cake party, since so many families were short on money then.

Today, schools and offices are the main sites for king cake parties these days. Someone will pick up a cake at the bakery on the way downtown and leave it out for everyone to grab a piece, or mom will send one to school on a Friday for the kids to share. You an always tell the locals from the transfers in any given office because the local knows what to do when he or she gets the baby. The foreigner just drops it on the counter or some such, and possibly might not even bring the next cake. Sacrilege.

But, I have just heard that while the holiday donations for the kids has been great, they are desperately in need of items for women. They must be NEW and not gently used.

Genesis needs:

Make up/Cosmetics
Hair care products

Journals

If any of you have any room left to give, please think of Genesis. You can drop these items off at the Genesis Holiday Drop Off in the Inwood Village Shopping Center, right next to the Inwood theater.

The "Wild About SAFY" Christmas Benefit was created to raise awareness for Specialized Alternatives for Families and Youth (SAFY) and to provide Christmas gifts for these children in Foster Families. This year's event will he held at the Samuel Lynne Galleries on November 9. Ticket Price: $25 online, $30 at the door. All proceeds will go to provide Christmas gifts for the Foster children and the children of families that host them.

SAFY will help over 4,500 children this year alone. These children come from all walks of life and are from all races, ages and backgrounds. SAFY's foster parents are professionally trained to provide treatment foster care that is tailored to the individual needs of each child with the ultimate goal of permanency in mind.

The Texas Friends of SAFY program was developed to increase awareness among individuals and corporations about SAFY Texas foster children, adoption and foster parent programs aimed at helping more Texas children in need of a safe, supportive and loving environment.

Texas began playing a game at the State Fair, 200 miles north of its Austin campus, in the early 1920s. However, the Longhorns didn't play the Sooners in Fair Park until 1929. You haven't heard much about the earlier games, because there's only so much heat in a rivalry between Texas and Oklahoma.

Nearly eight decades after their first meeting on that site, UT and OU will play in the Cotton Bowl, which has a capacity of more than 92,000. They are divvied up equally between the schools. Pick the appropriate aisle, and you can walk with all burnt orange on one side and crimson on the other.

For the entire month of September, customers can bring in an old mobile phone and donate it in exchange for a free drink (customers choice).

The Quarter Bar is working with Phoneraiser.com, a local organization that recycles these donated devices to vendors who refurbish or recycle them in some way. The money earned for phones collected at Quarter Bar will be donated to Operation Kindness - the oldest and largest nonprofit no-kill animal welfare organization that cares for homeless cat and dogs.

We knew we'd like the September issue of D Magazine when we saw a big stack of pancakes on the cover. The headline screamed "Best Breakfasts". (gulp) Would we make the list?

YES, WE DID!

D Magazine Readers Vote Bread Winners "Best Brunch"

Every publication in town has a "Best of" issue. And we are happy to take all the plaques and accolades you want to heap upon us! Usually there are two ways to win an award: Editors Choice and Readers Pick.

This year, D Magazine had over 900,000 votes (so they say) and their readers determined that Bread Winners was the best place to have brunch in the Dallas area. WOW.

The fact that we weren't the Editor's Pick meant we didn't get a big photo in the magazine or a paragraph from the editor singing our praises. We were reduced to a line-listing at the bottom of the feature. But, we'll take a Readers Choice award over an Editor's Pick any day of the week.

Why? Because it means that not just one person (ahem, Mr. Editor) but a tabulation of votes from hundreds, dare we say even thousands, of people deemed us worthy of this honor. What a surprise to get a phone call from Lady Gaga on Friday. Okay, it was one of her "people" who called in, but they called in for her!

As everyone knows, she was in Dallas this past weekend to perform for her sold-out performances at American Airlines Center.

It's not everyday you get to wait on one of People Magazine's "Most Beautiful People of 2010". But last Thursday, Kim Kardashian and new squeeze, Dallas Cowboy, Miles Austin, came into our Uptown location for lunch.

The two were very nice and gracious, although they declined our request for a photo. Kim said, "I don't want people to know I'm in town". Which is why we've waited a few days to report on this delicious bit of news. But since Alan Peppard at the Dallas Morning News broke the news for us in today's paper...

About Bread Winners

The very first Bread Winners opened in July of 1994 with 10 employees, an empty bank account and a prayer for customers. Jim and Cindy Hughes wanted work to feel like a “home away from home” atmosphere and embraced their new employees as extended family members. Many of the employees from those first few years remain with Bread Winners today for this very reason. All four of their children have worked in the restaurant at some point, as have both sets of their parents. It is truly a family business and a labor of love!

That first year, Bread Winners just served breakfast and lunch. Word quickly spread and soon dinner service was launched. Catering was then added a few years later due to the increasing demand. Today Bread Winners manages over 250 employees, runs 3 locations, operates a corporate catering service and has added the Quarter Bar in Uptown to round out their portfolio.

What a Business Can Get Out of Social Media

I have looked out at a full dining room many times and thought, "I would love to know what all these diners really think about my food and their experience." 5 years ago, if you had a bad (or good) experience, you might have told a few friends about it if it came up in conversation.

Today, anyone who comes into your place of business has a smartphone with a camera and is most likely snapping pictures of their order, their friends and your place of business. Then they are sharing their thoughts on their visit with their 523 Facebook Friends, 1256 Twitter followers, and who knows how many blog readers.

Friends, the times, they are a-changing.

We, for one, are thrilled with these new tools of engagement. It has been immensely rewarding to get the positive accolades from people who love our food, our staff and appreciate the efforts we make each and every day.

Yes, occasionally, we do get a bad review on Yelp or a negative tweet. and you know what... those comments are just as valuable. They give us customer feedback we probably would have otherwise never received and provide us with valuable information to make corrections.

So, keep on snapping your pics and tweeting, posting and blogging.

Come On, Get Happy! 50 Local Bars That Will Help You Do Just That.

Jesse Hughey of the Dallas Observer writes this in this week's edition, "With the temperatures rising just as sharply as discretionary income is falling, we could all use a drink. Preferably cold. Definitely cheap."

So, this week's cover story covers 50 local bars and what's great about each of them. Should we feel special we were included? On one hand, 50 bars is just about every bar in town, so it's not that special. But what about the poor handful of bars that didn't make the list? Man, that would stink.

Why hang at The Quarter Bar? Jesse says, "Because it's been too long since you've been to New Orleans. And when's the last time you plunked down a five-dollar bill for two drinks and got change?"

True 'dat.

Seriously, we are always grateful for the accolades and praise. And Jesse Hughey? He's welcome in our bar anytime...

First, they said it was the whoopie pie. Then, it was the glamorous macaroon. Most recently, cake balls are the frenzy. So, which exactly is the new cupcake? According to the Dallas Observer's, City of Ate blog, it's the cake ball.
